A tender 1955 Spanish film of childlike faith: an orphan raised by kindly monks befriends a crucified Christ in the forbidden attic, sharing his bread with the figure who comes to life to answer the boy's one deep wish — to see his mother. It is genuinely reverent and one of the more moving depictions of simple faith on film. A discerning viewer should simply go in aware of its explicitly Catholic-devotional shape (a monastic world, a crucifix that becomes the living Christ) and, more importantly, that the miracle Marcelino receives is death itself — Christ grants his wish by taking him to heaven to be with his mother, so the beautiful climax is also the child's passing. That ending is spiritually rich but bittersweet and may need explaining to young children. There is nothing objectionable here; the notes are about tone and theology, not content.
