Life is hard on the Flemings' ranch in the Alberta foothills where abused or neglected horses find refuge with a kind, hard-working family. Debts abound and the bank is about to foreclose. Can they keep the ranch running?

Why it's worth watching

Heartland is a heartwarming family drama that beautifully captures the bonds of family, the value of hard work, and the healing power of compassion. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, the series offers a refreshing, wholesome alternative to modern television, focusing on restoration, resilience, and community support.

What it praises

It praises the sanctity of family, dedication to the stewardship of animals and land, forgiveness, and the strength found in multi-generational relationships.

For discernment

Heartland is one of the few current series genuinely built around intact, multi-generational family life, honest work, forgiveness, and the patient rehabilitation of both wounded horses and wounded people, and its Alberta-ranch wholesomeness is real and unusual on modern television. It is not, however, sanitized: a discerning viewer should note the steady low-grade worldliness of a teen-and-twenties cast, girls in skimpy bikini tops and low-cut vests much of the time, a skinny-dipping dare (discreetly covered), and some underage drinking treated as ordinary growing-up. Language runs to 'a**,' 'd***,' and 'hell,' and there are genuinely tense injury scenes (a rodeo wreck, a gunshot wound, a metal bar through a man's leg). Faith is present only as background scenery, so the show's real virtues, loyalty and stewardship, float free of any explicit spiritual root. A warm, largely edifying family watch, with the caveat that its teenagers dress and behave like typical secular teens more than the 'wholesome' label implies.
